Jury Recommends Death Sentence for Scott Peterson

14 December 2004

In a case that has captivated Americans for months, a California court has recommended the death penalty for Scott Peterson for killing his pregnant wife and unborn child.

The jury made the recommendation Monday over the only other option -- life in prison without parole.

Peterson was found guilty last month of first degree murder in the death of his wife Laci, and second degree murder of his unborn son.

Prosecutors said Peterson killed Laci and dumped her body into San Francisco Bay in 2002 to escape marriage and fatherhood. The remains of Laci and the fetus washed ashore a few miles from where Peterson said he went fishing the day she disappeared.

The defense contended someone else killed her and said the prosecution never proved Peterson had a motive for the killings.
