Cuba Renews Formal Ties with European Union Nations

10 January 2005

Cuba say it has resumed formal ties with all European Union nations, ending a strain in relations following Cuba's 2003 government crackdown on dissidents.

Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque made the announcement Monday in Havana.  Last week, Mr. Roque announced that Cuba was renewing diplomatic contact with only eight EU countries, which included France, Germany and Britain.

In 2003, the Cuban government arrested and imprisoned 75 dissidents.  Fourteen of them have been released.

Following the crackdown, the European Union began to reduce high-level government visits and invited dissidents to embassy gatherings.
