Olympians Kenteris, Thanou Summoned to Answer Doping Allegations

29 January 2005

Disgraced Greek sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou have been summoned by a national sports tribunal to answer allegations that they evaded drug tests at last year's Athens Olympics.

The athletes, both medal-winners at the 2000 Games, appeared Saturday for a closed-door meeting with the Hellenic Association of Amateur Athletics.

The two runners withdrew from the Athens Olympics after missing out-of-competition drug tests and spending four days in a hospital, allegedly recovering from a motorcycle crash.

Kenteris and Thanou face a possible two-year ban from competition if they are found guilty by the five-member panel investigating the case.  The sprinters deny any wrongdoing.

Track's international governing body, the IAAF, already has suspended the athletes.
