Jean-Pierre Escalettes was named president of the French Football Federation Saturday after Claude Simonet stood down from the post.

The 69-year-old Escalettes was elected at the federation's headquarters in Paris. He received almost 93 percent of the votes cast by the general assembly.

Simonet had been head of the federation since February of 1994, but said in September he did not wish to continue for another term.

Escalettes is a former player with Paris Saint-Germain. He was the previous vice president of the French Football Federation and president of the French amateur soccer league.
