Three Romanian Journalists Feared Kidnapped in Iraq

29 March 2005

Romania's president has called on intelligence services to locate three Romanian journalists missing and feared kidnapped in Iraq.

Traian Basescu says his government alerted its allies in Iraq in hopes of finding the three. He spoke Monday, shortly after he made a surprise visit to his country's troops in Iraq.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi National Assembly is set to reconvene Tuesday to fill more senior positions in the new government.

On Monday, insurgents targeted Iraqi police in two attacks. In Baghdad, gunmen killed a police precinct chief and his driver. To the south, in Mussayeb, a suicide bomber killed two police who were patrolling holy shrines as tens of thousands of Shi'ites began an annual religious pilgrimage (Arbain) to the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf.

Some information for this report provided by AFP and Reuters.
