Lebanon's prime minister-designate has postponed offering his resignation to the president, saying he wants to consult with his political allies before giving up hope of forming a national unity government.

Omar Karami said Wednesday, he will meet with his pro-Syrian allies in the next two days.

Mr. Karami said Tuesday he would resign for a second time. He initially quit in February, after anti-Syrian protests erupted following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Mr. Karami was reappointed earlier this month.

His latest announcement follows a Syrian pledge Tuesday to the United Nations to withdraw all of its troops from Lebanon before the Lebanese elections in May.

Syria also protested a recent U.N. report on Mr. Hariri's assassination that was critical of Damascus. The government in Damascus called the report "far from objective."
