Anti-U.S. protests in several Afghan cities have left three more people dead as demonstrations continue over media reports of alleged desecration of the Koran by U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
On the third day of protests near the eastern city of Jalalabad Thursday, at least two people were killed when police fired on hundreds of angry villagers, some of whom were reported to be armed. Clashes between protesters and police in Jalalabad Wednesday killed at least five people and wounded 70 others.
In a province south of Kabul, one person was killed when protesters set an ammunition depot on fire.
In the capital city, several hundred students chanting "death to America" held a peaceful rally at Kabul University.
Meanwhile, in Washington, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Thursday, the United States does not tolerate disrespect of the Koran. She added that the allegations of Koran desecration are being investigated and if proven true, appropriate action will be taken.
