British authorities say the man fatally shot by police in a subway station on Friday was not connected to the recent attacks on London's transit system.

In a statement released Saturday, Scotland Yard called the shooting a "tragedy," and one deeply regretted by London's Metropolitan Police.

Officials say the man was under surveillance in connection with Thursday's attempted bombings, and refused police orders to stop while running through a subway station.

Witnesses said plainclothes officers chased the Asian-looking man onto a subway car, and then shot him at point-blank range.

Muslim leaders condemned the killing and called for a full investigation.

Meanwhile, experts say forensic evidence and the timing of Thursday's attacks exactly two weeks after the July 7 bombings that killed 56 people suggest both attacks may have been planned by the same terrorist group.
