Sudan's capital Khartoum has been placed under curfew to guard against further rioting in reaction to the death of John Garang, a former rebel leader recently sworn in as Sudan's first vice president.
Mr. Garang and 13 others died in a helicopter crash Saturday evening. When news of his death reached Khartoum early Monday morning, violence erupted in which at least 20 people were killed. Shops were looted and cars were set on fire.
President Bush, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and other world leaders have offered condolences over the death of Mr. Garang, who played a key role in forging a peace agreement earlier this year between the Sudanese government and southern rebels to end a 21 year civil war. Mr. Bush and Mr. Annan each urged the Sudanese to continue the implementation of the peace agreement.
Mr. Garang's political party, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, has elected his deputy, General Salva Kiir, to the party's chairmanship.
