Small Ohio Town Mourns Loss of 19 Marines Killed This Week in Iraq

04 August 2005

Family, friends and residents of a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio are mourning the loss of 19 U.S. Marines - all from the same unit - killed this week in Iraq.

On Wednesday, 14 Marines from the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines unit based in the Ohio town of Brook Park died when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb. Five more Marines from the same unit were killed in an ambush on Monday.

The deaths have rattled the residents of the small Cleveland suburb, which has just over 20,000 residents. Local media say almost everyone in the town knew one or more of the Marines killed in this week's attacks.

Relatives of the Marines killed have expressed both grief and anger, some calling for President Bush to withdraw the troops from Iraq, while others say the deaths only reaffirm their support for the war.
