Burundi's newly-elected president has appointed the nation's first post-war cabinet, made up of mostly new ministers.

President Pierre Nkurunziza named 20 ministers - including seven women - to his government late Tuesday.

The Associated Press reports 12 are from his party, the former rebel Forces for the Defense of Democracy. It says the other eight appointees come from five other political parties.

The president appointed a former army chief of staff, Major General Germain Niyoyankana, as the new minister of defense.

Mr. Nkurunziza, a member of the majority ethnic Hutu group, is a former rebel leader who fought the government for more than a decade.

His inauguration last week marked the end of 12 years of civil war. The war pitted Hutu rebels against the politically-dominant ethnic Tutsi minority. Some 300,000 people, mostly civilians, died in the conflict.
