Guatemalan authorities say fugitive Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman may have entered their country to conduct drug operations, and that a search is under way for him.

Guatemala's anti-drug chief Adan Castillo said Friday that authorities have not determined if Guzman is in Guatemala but that there is evidence he has entered the country.

He said police have information indicating the alleged Juarez cartel leader may have attended parties at ranches in northern and western Guatemala.

Guzman has been sought in Mexico since escaping from a maximum security prison in 2001. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is also seeking his capture and has posted a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest. He is wanted in California on charges of conspiracy to import cocaine, money laundering and other charges.
