The International Olympic Committee has officially stripped U.S. sprinter Jerome Young of the gold medal he won at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia.

The IOC also restored Colombian cyclist Maria Luisa Calle's bronze medal from last year's Athens Olympics.

Young was a member of the U.S. 4x400 meter relay squad in Sydney. He ran in the preliminaries but not in the final, which the U.S.A. captured with star Michael Johnson running the anchor leg.

In 2003, officials learned that Young had tested positive for steroids at the U.S. championships in 1999, and should not have been eligible to run. The International Association of Athletics Federations said Young should have been banned for two years.

The IOC originally wanted to strip the entire U.S. team of the gold, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled last year that only Young should be punished.

Calle had been stripped of the 2004 cycling bronze medal in the women's point race. The court overturned her disqualification by saying that the medicine she took did not contain banned substances.
