Investigators in Guatemala who are analyzing millions of recently discovered police files have found evidence documenting torture and extrajudicial killings during the country's 36-year civil war.
The files being examined in Guatemala City are among millions of documents linking the nation's notorious National Police to widespread human rights abuses.
Investigators say the files indicate the police force, which was dissolved as part of Guatemala's 1996 peace accord, had a key role in atrocities once believed to have been committed mostly by the army.
Officials estimate about 200,000 people were killed during the country's 1960 to 1996 civil war, most of them during the 1970's and 1980's.
