Visiting World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz says he hopes to learn about the efforts that Brazil is making to promote inclusive growth and reduce entrenched inequality.

The World Bank chief made his comments Thursday as he began his first official visit to Latin America. Mr. Wolfowitz said that over the next few days, he will travel to different parts of Brazil to see for himself the country's achievements and challenges.

Mr. Wolfowitz also met with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brasilia and pledged to continue the bank's support for improving the lives of Brazil's poorest citizens. The Brazilian leader in turn praised the country's strong relationship with the financial institution.

The World Bank says it has invested more than four billion dollars in some 50 active projects in Brazil - Latin America's largest economy.
