Seismologists Record Major Earthquake Near Fiji Islands

A powerful earthquake centered deep beneath the Pacific Ocean floor has struck near the Fiji islands, but there are no reports of damage or casualties.

The U.S. National Earthquake Information Center measured the strength of Tuesday morning's quake at magnitude 7.1. The jolt was nearly 600 kilometers below the surface, at a point about 100 kilometers northeast of Ndoi Island.
