Kosovo President Rugova Mourned

23 January 2006

Thousands of mourners are streaming into Kosovo's capital of Pristina to walk past the body of President Ibrahim Rugova.

Mr. Rugova died Saturday of lung cancer at age 61. He will lie in state for three days before his funeral Thursday. A government-declared 15 days of mourning begins Monday.

Kosovo's parliament held a special session Sunday to pay tribute to Mr. Rugova.

Parliamentary speaker Nexhat Daci, the acting president, says Kosovo is certain of its future because of Mr. Rugova's legacy.

President Rugova's death came just days before United Nations-sponsored talks on Kosovo's future were to have opened. The talks have been postponed until next month.

Kosovo is a Serbian province and has been under U.N. administration since 1999.

Kosovo's ethnic-Albanian majority wants independence, which Serbs strongly oppose.
