The fire at a Canadian mine where 70 miners have been trapped since early Sunday morning has been extinguished.

A spokesman for Mosaic, the U.S.-based company that operates the potash mine in the central province of Saskatchewan says firefighters are now in the process of clearing the mine of smoke and toxic gases.

The fire broke out more than a kilometer underground. The miners reported seeing smoke before taking shelter in specially-built safety rooms.

The spokesman says all the miners are safe and have enough oxygen, food and water for at least 36 hours.

Potash is a mineral used in the production of fertilizer.
