The Smithsonian Institution has decided to build a national museum of African American history on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., near the Washington Monument.
The Institution's Board of Regents, which oversees a complex of national museums and research centers, chose the site in a voice vote late Monday.
This new museum will be housed in a 31,500 square-meter building on the two-hectare site, a prime location for visitors because of its proximity to the Washington Monument and the White House.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture will tell the story of black Americans from slavery through civil rights. Officials at the Smithsonian hope to complete construction of the building by 2016.
