Top-seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia has been knocked out of the second round of the Adelaide International men's tennis tournament in Australia.

Hewitt, the world number four player, lost in three sets to unseeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5.

In the quarterfinals, Kohlschreiber takes on sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic. Berdych scored a three set win over Britain's Andy Murray (7-6, 4-6, 6-1).

Meanwhile, second seed Dominik Hrbaty of the Czech Republic overcame a first-set loss to defeat Australian wildcard Mark Philippoussis (3-6, 6-4, 6-1).

Hrbaty faces Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark, a three set winner over Croatia's Ivo Karlovic (2-6, 7-6, 6-4).

The hard court tournament is one of several events players are using to prepare for the first major tournament of the year, the Australian Open, which starts January 16 in Melbourne.
