President Bush makes his first trip to India and Pakistan this week, on a visit to build ties and discuss several bilateral agreements.

U.S. and Indian negotiators are working to finalize a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement ahead of Mr. Bush's arrival in New Delhi Wednesday.

The United States is trying to reach a deal that would offer India civilian nuclear technology in exchange for assurances that it will not be used for military purposes.

In an interview Friday with Indian television, the president said the politics of the agreement are difficult but it is important that India develops a safe and secure civilian nuclear program.

Mr. Bush told Pakistani television that U.S. relations with Pakistan are much larger than just the war on terrorism. Mr. Bush said he looked forward to discussing a bilateral investment treaty and increasing student exchanges.
