Switzerland has upset reigning champion Canada, 2-0, Slovakia downed the United States, 2-1, Russia defeated Kazakhstan, 1-0, and Germany skated to a 3-3 draw with host country Italy in the Olympic men's ice hockey tournament in Turin.

Canadian-born Paul DiPietro scored twice for Switzerland and goalkeeper Martin Gerber turned aside 49 shots as Switzerland stunned the defending gold medalists. It was Canada's first loss of the tournament and Switzerland's second upset win - they defeated the world champion Czech Republic, 3-2.

Finland leads Group A after scoring a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic. Jere Lehtinen of the Dallas Stars scored twice for Finland, which now has six points in the Group A standings. Canada is second, followed by Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

Meanwhile, Slovakia remained undefeated when Atlanta Thrashers teammates Marian Hossa and Peter Bondra scored while the United States got only one goal from Brian Rolston. Slovakia leads Group B with six points while the U.S. team is in fourth place with three. Only the top four teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals.

Earlier, Alexander Kharitonov scored the only goal of Russia's Group B match against Kazakhstan midway through the second period when he fired in the rebound of Maxim Sushinsky's shot. In another Group B match, Sweden crushed Latvia, 6-1, with Daniel Alfredsson scoring two goals for the Swedes.

Also Saturday, Germany had to rally to tie Italy 3-3 with Marcel Goc scoring the tying goal with just over one minute left in the contest.
