Tornadoes Kill 12 in Southern US

08 April 2006

At least 12 people have died in violent storms and tornadoes that hit the southern U.S. state of Tennessee.

The most recent two deaths were people injured by the storms late Friday who died hours later in the hospital. Tornadoes ravaged the central part of the state, including the state capital Nashville.

The storms flattened buildings, overturned cars and snapped power lines. At least 10,000 people in the area are without power.

High winds knocked down the walls of two buildings on the campus of a community college in the city of Gallatin, 40 kilometers northeast of Nashville.

The wave of violent weather was the second to hit Tennessee in the past week.

Tornadoes and thunderstorms killed 24 people Sunday in the western part of the state.
