People of Mexican heritage are celebrating the Cinco de Mayo holiday, which commemorates Mexico's victory over French invaders in the town of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

In the United States, the day is marked with parties, music, dancing, food and concerts as people celebrate Mexican history and culture. An estimated 25 million men and women of Mexican origin now live in the United States.

Earlier Thursday, President Bush celebrated Cinco de Mayo at the White House, saying the values Mexicans bring to the United States - religious faith, love of family and commitment to hard work - have made the country stronger. He also urged immigrants to the United States to learn English to better understand the U.S. national character and participate fully in American life.

The Cinco de Mayo holiday is celebrated more in the United States than in Mexico.
