Sixth Person Dies of Bird Flu in Egypt

18 May 2006

Health officials have confirmed that a 75-year-old woman died of bird flu in Egypt.

She is the sixth person in Egypt to die of the disease.  Officials say the woman, from Minya in southern Egypt, had been in contact with sick birds.

Bird flu has killed more than 115 people around the world.

Also Thursday, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the international community to help fight bird flu in his country - where 30 people have died from the disease.

In other developments, Indonesia's agriculture minister says initial tests show pigs and fowl living in North Sumatra, previously thought to be free of bird flu, have tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus.

Indonesia has the highest number of human bird flu fatalities after Vietnam.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
