The chairman of Somalia's Islamic Courts Union has pledged to track down the killer of a Swedish photojournalist.

Martin Adler died Friday after a gunman shot him at close range during a rally in Mogadishu.

Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed told journalists in the Somali capital Saturday that the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) has launched an investigation into the killing.

The shooting took place during a demonstration organized by the Islamic Courts Union. The 47-year-old Adler was filming the event. Demonstrators were showing support for an agreement signed Thursday between the ICU and Somalia's U.N.-backed transitional government.

The international journalist organization Committee to Protect Journalists says at least 14 journalists have been killed in Somalia since its last effective government fell in 1991.

Earlier this month, the ICU seized power from warlords in Mogadishu and much of southern Sudan. Its leaders have said they can restore stability and peace to the anarchic east African country.
