Israel has carried out a new round of attacks on Lebanon that police say killed 17 people and wounded more than 40 others.

In the deadliest attack early Monday, an airstrike on a military base in the northern coastal town of Abdeh killed at least seven Lebanese soldiers and wounded several others.

Witnesses say Israeli warplanes also hit Lebanon's northern port city of Tripoli and the eastern city of Baalbek, a stronghold of Hezbollah.

The new attacks came shortly after Hezbollah fired rockets that traveled the furthest ever inside Israel, about 45 kilometers, hitting the towns of Afula and Nazareth.

On Sunday, a Hezbollah rocket strike on the Israeli city of Haifa killed eight people in the deadliest such attack since Israel began its offensive last week against Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned of "far reaching consequences" after the attack on Haifa, about 30 kilometers from the Lebanese border.

Israeli forces renewed attacks Sunday on the Beirut international airport. It was the fourth time Israel struck the airport since beginning its offensive against Hezbollah after the Islamic extremist group captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid.

Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah vowed to continue attacks on Israel, following the rocket strike on Haifa.

Israeli military strikes have killed more than 160 people in Lebanon, including many civilians. At least 23 Israelis have died in scores of Hezbollah rocket attacks on Israel. Israel is demanding that Hezbollah guerrillas be disarmed and the captured Israeli soldiers be released.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
