Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has dissolved parliament and set a date for national elections.

The Zambian president announced late Wednesday that presidential, parliamentary, and local elections will be held on September 28.  Mr. Mwanawasa also dissolved his cabinet.

Under Zambian law, Mr. Mwanawasa will continue to run the country alongside his vice president and senior officials until a new government takes over.

Zambia's main opposition parties have yet to agree on a single candidate to oppose the incumbent president, who heads the Movement for Multiparty Democracy.

The president has already declared that he will seek re-election despite suffering a minor stroke in April.
