Mexico's President Vicente Fox has called on Mexico City officials to clear street protests by supporters of a leftist presidential candidate demanding a vote recount.

A presidential spokesman said Wednesday that the protests are blocking people from their jobs and hurting the capital city's economy.

Mexico City's mayor has declined to take action against the protesters who have set up tents and blocked traffic on Reforma Avenue since Sunday.

Leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said the protests will continue until all ballots in the July 2 vote are recounted.

Election officials say conservative Felipe Calderon won the election by less than one percent of ballots.

The nation's top electoral court is hearing election complaints.  It has until September 6 to rule on Lopez Obrador's challenge and officially announce the winner of the election.
