Palestinian security forces say Israel has arrested a lawmaker from the governing Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Witnesses say Fadel Salah was detained late Sunday after Israeli military vehicles entered the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Hours earlier, the Israeli army arrested Palestinian parliamentary speaker Abdel Aziz Duaik in a raid on his house in Ramallah. Israeli officials said Duaik - also a member of Hamas - was taken into custody because he is a leader of a terrorist group.

Hamas' charter calls for Israel's destruction.

Hamas and others throughout the Arab world condemned the arrest of Duaik. But an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said efforts to detain a chief Hamas official come in the framwork of the ongoing conflict with the the militant group.

Israel has detained more than 30 Hamas officials, since Palestinian militants killed two Israeli soldiers and kidnapped another in June. Israel's military has said its offensive in the Gaza Strip will continue until the kidnapped soldier is freed.

Separately, Palestinian security sources say a Palestinian man was shot dead while driving with his son in the West Bank early Monday. The Israeli army was unable to confirm the incident.
