Police in Burundi have arrested the country's former president, Domitien Ndayizeye, in connection with a probe into an alleged coup plot.

The former president was arrested Monday in front of the senate building in Burundi's capital, Bujumbura. Police officials say he was taken immediately to prosecutors for questioning.

Burundian authorities arrested several others last month accused of involvement in the alleged plot. Among those taken into custody were Ndayizeye's spokesman Pancrace Cimpaye and former Vice President Alphonse Kadege.

The current president, Pierre Nkurunziza, said earlier this year that intelligence officers had uncovered a plot to overthrow his government. He said the plotters included civilians, military officials, and policemen who held secret meetings to discuss their plans.

Burundi is struggling to rebuild in the wake of a civil war that killed some 300,000 people. One rebel group has refused to sign a peace agreement with the government.
