Israeli Air Strike Kills 4 Palestinian Security Men in Gaza City

28 August 2006

Palestinian medics say an Israeli air strike has killed four Palestinian members of a Hamas-led security force in Gaza.

Local officials say an Israeli missile killed the four men early Monday morning on a Shajaiyeh neighborhood street in Gaza City.

The officials say the men served in a special forces unit of the Palestinian Interior Ministry, which is controlled by the ruling Hamas militant group.

The Israeli military says it targeted a group of militants in Gaza City, but only confirmed that two militants were shot and killed by Israeli ground troops.

Israeli troops entered the district Saturday as part of a military operation against Palestinian militants.

On Saturday and Sunday, Israeli forces killed three suspected militants in the area and wounded several other Palestinians, including two journalists.

The journalists were riding a car used by the Reuters news agency when an Israeli missile hit their vehicle Saturday night.

Reuters says the vehicle was clearly marked as a press vehicle. The Israeli military says the vehicle was moving suspiciously near Israeli troops, and the press markings were not visible in the darkness. Israel said it regrets the injuries.
