Hungary's foreign ministry in Budapest summoned Slovakia's ambassador Monday to protest anti-Hungarian incidents in Slovakia last week.

An ethnic Hungarian woman was beaten and robbed Friday in western Slovakia apparently after being overheard speaking Hungarian over a cell phone.

One day later, police arrested three men who carried a large banner reading "Death to the Hungarians."

Hungary's Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany has condemned what he calls atrocities and increasing xenophobia in Slovakia.

He demanded Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico make a similar statement.

Mr. Fico said Monday Slovak authorities will take action but said it is not up to Hungary to decide when and how Slovakia should respond to incidents.

Mr. Fico leads a coalition government with the far-right Slovak National Party, which has been accused of anti-minority rhetoric, especially against ethnic Hungarians and Roma.
