A British magistrate has extended the detention of eight people charged with plotting to bomb U.S.-bound airliners over the Atlantic.

The suspects, who face charges of conspiracy to murder and preparing acts of terrorism, appeared in court Monday by video link from a maximum security prison in London.  The court ordered an additional hearing in two weeks.      

The suspects are among 25 people arrested on or after August 10th for what police say was a foiled plot to smuggle liquid explosives aboard up to 10 U.S.-bound flights.

In a separate case, a British court Sunday granted police more time to question 14 men arrested in another anti-terrorism raid. 

British law allows terrorism suspects to be held without charge for a maximum of 28 days, but police must get weekly court approval.

The court Sunday gave authorities until Wednesday to question three of the 14 men arrested in a probe into terror funding and recruitment.  The remaining 11 are to return to court Friday. Police say they are not linked to the airliner bombing plot.

British authorities say police are monitoring thousands of British Muslims and others who might be potential security suspects.
