Jordan says the gunman who allegedly killed a British tourist and wounded six others in Amman Monday acted alone and is not part of any terror group.

A government spokesman identified the attacker as Nabil Ahmed Issa Salem al-Jaaurah, a 38-year-old Jordanian.

An Iraq-based Muslim group, Mujahedeen Shura Council In Iraq, praised the gunman in an Internet message Tuesday, but did not take responsibility for the shooting. The group has claimed responsibility for several attacks and kidnappings in Iraq.

Witnesses and survivors of the attack say he shouted "Allahu Akbar," or "God is Great," as he opened fire at the ruins of Amman's Roman amphitheater.

The wounded included two British tourists and travelers from the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. A Jordanian tour guide also was wounded.

Jordanian officials say the gunman is from the town of Zarqa - the same hometown as slain al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

In a news release Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy in Amman condemned the shooting and warned travelers to avoid the neighborhood of the attack.
