Major League Baseball rookie pitcher Anibal Sanchez of Venezuela has thrown a rare no-hitter in just his 13th career start.

The 22-year-old Sanchez tossed the majors' first no-hitter in more than two years Wednesday, striking out six batters to give the Florida Marlins a 2-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

He posted the fourth no-hitter in franchise history and the first in the majors since Randy Johnson had a perfect game for the Diamondbacks on May 18, 2004.

In another National League contest, San Diego rookie Paul McAnulty's first career home run was a game-ending two-run shot in the 11th inning that gave his Padres a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Washington's Jose Vidro hit a game-ending two-run single in the ninth inning to give the Nationals a 7-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The San Francisco Giants edged the Cincinnati Reds 3-2. The Houston Astros got by the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3. Chicago's Derrek Lee hit a grand slam to lead the Cubs to a 7-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Los Angeles Dodgers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. And, the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves in both games of a doubleheader, 4-1 and 8-0.

In the American League, Seattle's Kenji Johjima drove in the winning run in the 10th inning to give the Mariners a 5-4 win over the Tigers in Detroit. After the game, the Tigers released designated hitter Dmitri Young. The Oakland Athletics beat the Texas Rangers 9-6. The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Baltimore Orioles 8-4. The Chicago White Sox crushed the Boston Red Sox 8-1. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays downed the Minnesota Twins 4-2. The New York Yankees used a pair of three-run homers by Jorge Posada to defeat the the Kansas City Royals 8-3. And, the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Cleveland Indians 3-2.
