Tennis: Sharapova Wins US Open

10 September 2006

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova has won the U.S. Open women's championship in New York, for her second career major title.

The third-seeded Sharapova upset world number two and five-time Grand Slam champion Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium, 6-4, 6-4, in Saturday's final. Sharapova called her victory "an amazing honor."

Maria's other major win came in 2004 at Wimbledon in London when she was only 17 years old.

Henin-Hardenne, who played in all four Grand Slam finals this year, last won the U.S. Open in 2003.

In Sunday's men's final, two-time defending champion and world number one Roger Federer of Switzerland takes on hard-hitting 2003 champion Andy Roddick of the United States.
