The Detroit Tigers are on their way to the Major League Baseball World Series after topping the Oakland Athletics 6-3 Saturday to complete a four-game sweep in the American League Championship series.

Venezuelan Magglio Ordoñez homered twice, including a dramatic game-ending three-run shot with two outs in the ninth inning.

The win puts to rest 12 straight years of losing and sends the Tigers to their first Series appearance since winning baseball's championship in 1984.

Manager Jim Leyland, who spent his first 18 years of professional baseball in the Tigers' organization as a player and manager without ever making it to the major leagues, dedicated the win to the fans. Leyland is in his first year as Tigers' manager, but won the World Series in 1997 as manager of the Florida Marlins.

The Tigers now enjoy a week of rest before hosting the first World Series game next Saturday.

The St. Louis Cardinals shut out the New York Mets 5-0 Saturday to take a two games to one edge in their best-of-seven National League Championship series.

Pitcher Jeff Suppan scattered three hits over eight innings, and hit a home run to lead the host Cardinals.
