08 November 2006

Veterans of the Iraq war did not fare well as candidates in two closely watched elections for the U.S. House of Representatives.

In the midwestern state of Illinois, Democrat Tammy Duckworth lost to Republican Peter Roskam. Duckworth lost both her legs while serving as a military helicopter pilot in Iraq.

Of the nearly one dozen veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who competed in the congressional elections, only one ran as a Republican.

He is Van Taylor of Texas, who lost by a large margin in President Bush's home district to an incumbent Democrat, Chet Edwards.

Taylor is a U.S. Marine who served as a captain in the Iraq war. He is a strong supporter of President Bush and the president's policies on Iraq.

Meanwhile, no victor has been declared in a key race in the northeastern state of Pennsylvania. Iraq war veteran Patrick Murphy is in a dead-heat with the incumbent, Republican Michael Fitzpatrick.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
