The U.S. military says seven American troops have been killed in Iraq since Saturday.

The military says one soldier was killed in Baghdad Sunday. Another died of wounds from a roadside bomb north of the capital. And four soldiers and a Marine were killed in volatile Al Anbar province.

In other violence, a suicide car bomb killed three policemen Sunday in the northern city of Kirkuk.

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, in a television interview, says violence in Iraq is worse than a civil war. He says he agrees with Iraqis who say they were better off under ousted president Saddam Hussein.

Meanwhile, Iraqi officials say lawyers for Saddam have appealed his death sentence in the case of the execution of 148 men and boys from the Shi'ite town of Dujail in the 1980s.

In other developments, the U.S. Air Force says the pilot of an F-16 that crashed in Iraq last week was killed. He was originally listed as missing in action.
