A damaged truck is seen after a suicide attack on a NATO convoy

British marines attacked a Taleban-held valley in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday and one marine was killed during the battle and another was wounded.

The fighting took place in Helmand province.

In Kandahar city, also in the south, a suicide bomber rammed his car into a NATO convoy, wounding nine civilians and two NATO soldiers.  There was no immediate word on the soldiers' nationality. 

Authorities did not say who might have been behind the bombing, but most similar attacks have been claimed by the Taleban, which was ousted from power during the U.S.-led invasion in late 2001.

On Monday, NATO officials said alliance troops had killed about 80 Taleban rebels during a battle Sunday in southern Helmand province's Musa Qala district.
