Thai police investigators examine site where bomb exploded at Kong Toey market in Bangkok, 31 Dec 2006

Thai investigators continue to search for those responsible for a series of bombings in the capital, Bangkok, on New Year's Eve, which killed at least three people and injured 38 others.

Although it is not clear who is behind the attacks, Thai officials say they were aimed at creating panic and undermining the current military government. The Thai military deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a bloodless coup in September.

The government is blaming the attacks on former politicians who lost power in the coup, although it has not specifically named Mr. Thaksin as a suspect.

The former leader, who has been living outside the country since the coup, issued a statement Tuesday in which he denied any involvement in the bombings. He blamed Islamist insurgents rooted in southern Thailand.
