Indonesian officials say the United States and Singapore have joined the search for a missing passenger jet that vanished from radar screens earlier this week with 102 people on board.

Transportation Minister Hatta Radjsa says Singapore has sent in aircraft (Fokker-50) equipped with sophisticated equipment to help search waters and land where the Adam Air Boeing 737 may have gone down. Radjsa says the United States is using satellite imagery to help aid the search.

Military and civilian search teams continued to scour the coast off the northern island of Sulawesi. Rescue teams also are combing the island's dense tropical forests and mountainous terrain on its western coast.

On Tuesday, senior Indonesian officials said the plane's wreckage and 12 survivors had been found. They later retracted that statement, shocking passengers' families.

Transportation officials say the plane was flight-worthy and they blame bad weather for the apparent crash.
