Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh says he and President Mahmoud Abbas have agreed to keep gunmen from their rival factions off the streets.

Mr. Haniyeh spoke early Friday after holding emergency talks with Mr. Abbas aimed at ending the factional violence.

Six Palestinians were killed Thursday in clashes in the Gaza Strip between forces loyal to Mr. Haniyeh's ruling Hamas party and Mr. Abbas' Fatah faction.

The dead included a Hamas militant and at least four members of Fatah, including a senior Fatah colonel.

Medical sources say at least 30 people were wounded.

The fighting spread to the northern West Bank, where witnesses say unidentified militants attacked at least two senior Hamas officials. In the town of Jenin, assailants torched the car of a Hamas official.

Meanwhile, Palestinian journalists held protests against Monday's abduction of a news photographer in Gaza City.

There has been no word from photographer Jaime Razuri or his kidnappers. Razuri works for the French news agency.

Kidnappings are frequent in the Gaza Strip, but hostages are usually released within hours.
