Tennis: Haas, Gonzalez Post Upset Wins at Australian Open

The women's quarterfinal field has been set at the first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year,- the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Top-seeded Maria Sharapova beat No. 22 fellow-Russian Vera Zvonareva, 7-5, 6-4 on Monday. In the round-of-eight, Sharapova plays another Russian, Anna Chakvetadze, who upset eighth-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, 6-4, 6-1.

Three-time Australian Open champion Martina Hingis of Switzerland also advanced, beating No. 19 Li Na of China, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. The sixth-seeded Hingis will face No. four Kim Clijsters, after the Belgian topped 15th-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-1, 7-5.

In the men's draw, Tommy Haas of Germany and Chile's Fernando Gonzalez posted upsets to reach the quarterfinals. The 10th-seeded Gonzalez surprised No. 5 James Blake of the United States, 7-5, 6-4, 7-6. He will play second-seeded Rafael Nadal, who was extended to five sets before overcoming No. 15 Andy Murray of Scotland (6-7,6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1).

The 12th-seeded Haas needed four sets to get by No. 8 David Nalbandian of Argentina (4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3). In the quarterfinals, he will take on third-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko, a four-set (5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6) winner over 13th-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych.
