Bollywood's hottest couple tied the knot Friday in a traditional Hindu ceremony in the Indian city of Mumbai.

More than 1,000 fans lined the streets and climbed trees to catch a glimpse of the bride, Aishwarya Rai, a former Miss World and actress, and the groom, film star Abhishek Bachchan.

Hundreds of police were deployed to keep journalists and fans from disrupting the ceremony.

It began with a procession led by Bachchan riding a white horse along the road between one of the family bungalows to another, where his bride was waiting for him.

The pair have starred together in a number of movies. 31-year-old Bachchan is the son of screen legend Amitabh Bachchan. 33-year-old Rai has acted in more than 40 films.

There was drama late Thursday when an Indian woman claiming to be the lover of the groom slashed her wrist in front of the actor's home. She was not seriously injured.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and AP.
