Officials in the central U.S. state of Kansas continued searching through debris Sunday for victims of a powerful tornado that devastated the town of Greensburg.

Emergency workers say more victims of the storm could still be located in the rubble of homes and businesses leveled by the tornado.

The Greensburg tornado killed at least eight people Friday. Two others have been killed by storms elsewhere in Kansas - one Friday in Stafford County and one Saturday in a separate storm not far from Greensburg.

Authorities said Greensburg residents will be allowed to return to their home sites on Monday morning to recover what they can. The area has been off limits to residents since the tornado hit the town of 1,500.

In Washington, President Bush declared Greensburg a disaster area and ordered federal aid to help rebuild it.

The National Weather Service says Friday's twister in Greensburg was 1.6 kilometers wide with winds as strong as 265 kilometers per hour.

The peak tornado season in the United States runs from March to early July.
