Egypt's parliament has voted to expel the nephew of the late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat after a court ruled the nephew to be bankrupt.

Parliament voted Tuesday to expel Mohamed Anwar Esmat Sadat after an assembly committee voted on Sunday to recommend the action. Sadat, whose uncle was assassinated in 1981, was elected to parliament in 2005.

Parliamentary sources said Sadat produced documents showing he had repaid his debts. However, parliament speaker Fathi Surur said he did not have the power to overturn a court ruling declaring Sadat bankrupt.

In 2006, an Egyptian military tribunal sentenced Mohamed Sadat's brother, Talaat Sadat, to a year in jail for suggesting the armed forces were involved in Anwar Sadat's 1981 murder. Talaat Sadat is also a parliament member.
