topped last weekend's US box office chart, taking in $32.1 million.

The Biblical comedy starring Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman fell far short of the $68 million opening enjoyed by its 2003 predecessor Bruce Almighty, starring Jim Carrey. Nikki Rocco, head of distribution at Universal Pictures, was optimistic about Evan's long-term prospects, declaring that its family-oriented PG rating could give it a long shelf life.

The Stephen King adaptation 1408, starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in the story of a man trapped in a hotel room with malevolent spirits, opened in second place with $20.175 million.

Michael Moore's health care documentary Sicko took in $70,000 via an early opening in one New York City theater. It also enjoyed sold-out June 23 sneak previews at 43 other theaters around the country, where tickets were reportedly being sold at upwards of $40 each. It opens nationwide June 29.
