Russian news agencies are reporting that Iran will put its first nuclear power plant online shortly after the Russian-built facility is completed in September.

The news agencies Itar-Tass and Interfax quoted Iranian officials Tuesday as saying that the nuclear facility in Bushehr will be completed in two months.

The officials said the facility will begin generating electricity shortly after completion.

U.S. President George Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged after a meeting on Monday in the northeastern U.S. state of Maine to cooperate with attempts to curb Iran's nuclear programs.  They pledged to work with the U.N. Security Council to encourage Iran to stop uranium enrichment. 

The United States accuses Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons.  Iran denies the claim.

The United States and other western countries worry that Iran will obtain the nuclear fuel needed to make an atomic weapon through its enrichment activities.

The U.N. Security Council has imposed limited sanctions on Iran for failing to abide by demands to halt its uranium enrichment program.
